REVIEW:
" Film is basically a collection of very slick set pieces, decorated with enough shower scenes, crotch shots and incipient lesbianism to rank as a male-fantasy classic, despite the total absence of revealing nudity. With English dialogue that seems to be cut-and-pasted from comic strips, it's the action sequences and thesps' charisma that carry the movie, along with Johnny Choi's high-gloss lensing and tight-as-a-thong editing by ace cutter Angie Lam.

Thankfully, Ching's semi-traditional martial arts choreography is up to the task, re-establishing him in one swoop as a leading practitioner. Though the leads do a good amount of their own stunts, doubling is also seamless; and it's good to see Lee, after a host of small roles in Z-grade pictures (billed as Lei Fei), showing off her genuine skills more extensively.

With Wu relegated to a reactive role, it's the babes who carry the picture, with former model Maggie Q burning up the screen as the svelte but doubting Charlene. As her lovelorn buddy Katt, Anya makes a fine screen companion, fire to Charlene's ice. Cheng (dubbed) is solid as Charlene's mom, and Wong (a relative veteran of such fare) coolly matriarchal as Madame M, with a wisp of irony.

Pic was entirely shot in Hong Kong and the Philippines. Original title literally means "Naked Special Agents." "

Dream

Genre: Romance, Drama
Starring: Joe Odagiri, Na-yeong Lee
Release year: 2008
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Jin wakes up from a nightmare of a traffic accident. It drives him to the very spot and witnesses an accident, which replicates his dream. He follows the police to the suspect’s home and watches as Ran denies the hit-and-run accusation since she was asleep the entire night. Jin explains his dream to them and asks to be charged instead. He is convinced that there’s an unexplainable connection between the two. They discover that when he dreams, she acts out his dream in her sleep.

RATING: ?/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" Dream naturally possesses some black comic laughs, as Jin and Ran's situation is categorically ridiculous. However, Kim Ki-Duk gives this fantastic plot device an observed and almost mundane focus, revealing their predicament in matter-of-fact, immersive fashion. Each night, Jin nods off and Ran rises from her sleep, stiffly acting out his dreams with uncertain, funny, suspenseful and even tragic consequences. The whole thing is played straight and not for comedy, and it ultimately becomes natural to become involved with the characters and their unique problem. The situation creates a simple but compelling tension, where the audience wants the two to find a solution to their little sleeping problem before things go too far. However, the solutions are sometimes disturbing (Kim Ki-Duk's preoccupation with character self-mutilation makes a return) and mutual love may not be enough to prevent a terrible outcome.

Still, by the time everything's resolved, the characters have earned sympathy and identification such that their fate is something the audience can understand and even find comfort in. Dream can be enjoyed on multiple levels; as a narrative, the film is unusual but complete in its development, and reaches an appropriate, affecting conclusion. More can be gleamed if a viewer chooses to look beyond the narrative. Kim taps into very common and acute themes - love, heartbreak, powerlessness, self-loathing - mining them for images and connections that find emotional resonance. The experience isn't for everyone (seeing Joe Odagiri stab his skull with needles to stay awake is likely not everyone's cup of tea) and some details are needlessly metaphorical, but the emotions elicited are strong ones. Like most Kim Ki-Duk films, Dream is an acquired taste, but those willing to accept his unusual ideas and sometimes twisted emotions should find it satisfying and even rewarding. "

Butterfly Lovers

This time, they find each other in the world of martial arts. Liang is highly skilled in martial arts and resides in the mountains. Zhu’s father, in order to pay the kindness shown to him, has betrothed her to a General Ma, although Zhu is in love with Liang. Love can fester into hate in some while in the selected few, it can lead to undying love that survives one lifetime after another.

RATING: 6.75/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" The Butterfly Lovers are in name and in cute pictures adorned on the hero's sword only, while having the motif hammered through with the bountiful CG butterflies in artificially painted landscapes. While the story may be already somewhat familiar, as I mentioned, it veered too much of a distance away from its Liang-Zhu roots to lean more toward R&J, and it became apologetic for it right at the beginning by stating up front some hokey rationale about this being the supposed 10th reincarnation story of a pair of virgin lovers match-made in Heaven (and seriously, Heaven has such a wry sense of wicked humour).

That aside, the other draw in being a martial arts version, fell flat too. Action choreographed by veteran Ching Siu Tung, the fights look terribly tired and doesn't contain any innovative sequences that would wow you. While the finale battle between lover and lover-wannabe tried to elevate its street-cred by having it fought at night and in the rain, it became cheat-sheet action with plenty of slow motions and pretty poses, which of course are nice to look at, only as a framed movie still. And you could probably play a drinking game with spot-the-moments of familiar action sequences, which borrows even from The Bourne Ultimatum (no kidding!), albeit done with less intensity.

Charlene Choi's star is likely to be rising given the unfortunate scandal of the other Twin, and here she snags the meaty role of one-half of the star crossed lovers in Zhu Yangi, the daughter of a wealthy family who had to be bundled off to understudy martial arts with the Ease Soul Clan, dressed as a guy because the Clan is an all-boys organization only. But Charlene being Charlene, she's too cute to pass off as a boy despite being bound unsuccessfully across the chest, and trying her best to keep her voice low, which (and probably the dubbed voice) failed to keep consistent and abandoned the effort altogether. Why everyone in the story can't interpret her explicit feminine charms, is a miracle in itself.

The male lead role is played by relative newcomer Wu Chun, who's a member of a Taiwan pop band known as Fahrenheit. He would probably raise some temperatures here as the resident heartthrob and best fighter of the Ease Soul Clan, and any suspicion of his Liang Chun Shan being a closet gay (well after all Liang is to find himself strangely attracted to Zhu) get tossed out the window when it's made clear from the onset that he suspects Yangi's gender and dreams of beautiful maidens. I guess one should go out some ways to protect his pop idol image as the Romeo for his female fans.

Much of the story goes through the usual drudgery of having both characters meet, and starting to fall in love through activities and interaction in and around the Clan base, so it's pretty much following the rote here, that doesn't call for any award winning performances, and thus none delivered as you don't really feel the happiness or tragedy of the lovers' predicament. Harlem Yu probably added a bit of cheeky fun as the Clan's resident healer Herbal Head, but don't expect any more of the supporting cast to be anything other than one-dimensional, or serving more than their singular or forgettable screen functions. The synopsis above would give you an idea of what's to transpire, and it's nothing new for serial daters who hit the cinemas for their regular fix of romantic date-movies.

But I suppose if you're new to the story, you just might want to give this version a go and keep an open mind, because its ending is nothing short of being macabre "

REVIEW:
" On a disappointing note, if you have already seen the trailers, the scary bits have pretty much been revealed. Having seen these bits, I saw the supposed scary parts coming from miles away. And, just as the lazy horror flicks that have been constantly churned out, the scares are tiny and mild.

There were genuine moments when you will feel claustrophobic with the cameras being up close to the actors and the things that happen to them in the coffins. This should have been further explored where the audience could constantly be kept in fear with little room to breathe, which should be the case for a horror movie.

In crafting the story around the characters and their respective loved ones, the movie attempts to make this horror flick a tearjerker at the end. This further confuses the direction the movie is going and the end result is a generally bland effort.

While Ananda Everingham performs decently, Karen Mok gives her best in what is another run-of-the-mill production. Ananda was far better in Shutter, here; his performance was more pedestrian than anything else. With Karen, you feel the pain and guilt her character is going through and this is what makes the movie watchable enough. The highlight of the supporting cast is another resident Thai horror actress, Napakpapha Nakprasitte of Art of the Devil fame, who surprisingly does not really encounter anything scary herself, resigned to playing Karen’s best friend. The writer/director of this movie is Ekachai Uekrongtham of Beautiful Boxer and Pleasure Factory fame. It was quite a surprise for him to come up with a horror movie but I guess it shows that he should just stick to dramas.

Following the fates of the characters in the movie, the end result is one that is more disappointing than a miracle. I can only wish that wannabe horror film-makers learn from the best before making yet another ho-hum movie. "

REVIEW:
" From the delightful mind of Mitani Koki comes the clever and crowd-pleasing comedy The Magic Hour which had the entire theater up in stitches when I saw it during the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. I can't remember the last time I had that much fun at the movies.

Though more ambitious, over-the-top, and narrative-driven than Mitani's previous slice-of-life Suite Dreams, The Magic Hour starts from a similar foundation. Again, he places eccentric characters in a limited space and lets them roam free on the set, crossing paths and lighting fires through comical coincidences, quirky set pieces, and smile-tugging dialogue - but this time a hotel just isn't enough. Mitani built his own quaint little town in Toho that harks back to another place and another era with its elegant buildings, handsome streets, and old-time glamour. Mitani's theater roots are clear in just about every frame of the film, from the nostalgic set and wardrobe to the dramatic acting to the deliberately staged scenes and camerawork. And yet, so charming and self-contained is Mitani's creation, when the film ventures out of the town of Sucago, it is the "real world" that seems fake rather than Mitani's world of suspended reality.

The Magic Hour's all-star cast goes along for the ride with theatrical bravado. Tsumabuki Satoshi exercises his full range of goofy facial expressions from Waterboys, 69, and Haunted Samurai to play desperate nightclub manager Bingo who's been caught sleeping with the boss's girl (Fukatsu Eri, as a selfishly sassy cabaret singer). To save his hide from hitting the bottom of the harbor, Bingo pretends to know legendary hitman Della Togashi whom his boss (Nishida Toshiyuki) is trying to find. Bingo lives only if he can bring Della, so he hires stuntman Murata (Sato Koichi) to act as the hitman under the guise of shooting a movie. Uproarious scenes of yakuza wheeling and fake filmmaking follow as Bingo flounders around trying to keep both parties under wraps about each other's identities. Sato Koichi, in particular, acts up a storm as Murata acting up a storm as Della Togashi, and the results are utterly hilarious.

Mitani Koki said he wanted to make the audience laugh three times a minute with The Magic Hour. I wasn't keeping count, but he can't be far from the mark. With earnest characters, clever direction, intelligent slapstick, and jazzy snazz, The Magic Hour is simply a wildly entertaining film that makes you laugh from the heart. Perhaps what makes The Magic Hour most affecting and enjoyable of all though is that it's a film that loves film. The director's passion for the medium is apparent in the premise and characters: the movie within a movie, the accidental director, the bit actor with oh-so-much heart, the production crew that deliver the final bang. Mitani Koki celebrates cinema and the people who create cinema in the best possible way - by making a great film. "

Connected

Genre: Crime, Action, Suspense, Thriller
Starring: Louis Koo, Barbie Hsu, Nick Cheung, Liu Ye, Fan Siu Wong, Flora Chan, Eddie Cheung, Wong Cho Lam
Release year: 2008
Language: Chinese - Cantonese/Mandarin
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
All it takes to save a life is one phone call . Kidnapped by a group of threatening men led by a mysterious mastermind (Liu Ye), engineer Grace Wong (Barbie Xu) is locked in a tool shed with a broken analog phone, which she repairs just enough to make an outgoing phone call. She's able to make a connection with a mobile phone belonging to Bob (Louis Koo), a harried debt collector who's hurrying to the airport to see off his estranged son. Bob is skeptical of Grace's plea for help, and a passing traffic cop (Nick Cheung) dismisses the call as a prank. But something in Bob's instincts tells him that she's speaking the truth, and he rushes to find Grace's young daughter, only to witness her being kidnapped by the unknown villains. Soon Bob is embroiled in a pulse-pounding race against all odds, with time running out and his mobile phone's battery running down. Can this irresponsible divorced father with a dead-end future become a hero and save the lives of those who depend on him?

REVIEW:
" Following an unlikely hero (Bob, played by Louis Koo) who races through Hong Kong’s cityscape to stay on the line with a kidnapped woman calling on a broken phone (Grace, played by Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu), the story’s premise stretches the limits of credibility, but works wonders as an excuse for a frenzied action movie, if not also a mobile phone advertisement. Sometimes you just have to give it to the advertisers: four years on since Cellular, they’ve now seamlessly integrated such technologies as phone map, video calling, and MMS into the tight storyline.

The plot, as if it really matters, comes down to this: how many multiple car crashes could you willingly cause only minutes into a phone call from a total stranger pleading for help? The answer: ‘many’ – this film is to be enjoyed for its hyper-kinetic set-pieces more than anything else. As a result, every action sequence in Connected has been turned up a notch from the original: when the kidnappers capture Grace, they don’t just break into her house, but decide to crash straight into her car at full speed; when Bob’s car accidentally runs into the wrong lane, it’s not just about a few swerving cars, but a truly spectacular multiple car crash, and the collapse of a huge scaffolding, only coming to a halt after colliding with a truckload of Pepsi’s newest product. Talk about timing.

Leaving aside Chan’s usual brilliant handling of action, the director has also surprisingly shown a deft hand in cutting out the B-movie-ish crap from Cellular, which arguably kept the original from becoming a truly respectable film. Doing away with Jessica Biel’s annoying ex-girlfriend character, the green facemask on a disgruntled William H. Macy, and the “Ricky Martin” jokes of the original, Connected even finds time to pull a few heartstrings by making its protagonist a debt-collecting single father striving not to upset his young son – a fantastic touch when one compares him with the original’s pathetic protagonist, who races against time just to please his ex-girlfriend (who, by the way, despises him).

While it’s clear that Chan does try hard to smooth out the implausibility of the material (like changing the profession of Grace ‘the miracle phone rescuer’ from a high-school teacher to an electronics engineer), there are inevitably some missteps in his grand scheme of ramping everything up: among others, the setting of a pivotal scene at a popular site for model plane enthusiasts strikes me as an unintentional insult on the kidnappers’ intelligence.

But then again, I only managed to recognise these flaws upon retrospective reflection – something that this film is clearly not designed for. Back in the cinema, I was pretty convinced that this is one of the most enjoyable films to come out of Hong Kong this year "

SYNOPSIS:

The Infernal Affairs Trilogy is the Chinese equivalent of The Godfather Saga, a gangland epic that is both a tremendous artistic achievement and a pop culture phenomenon. Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love) and Andy Lau (House of Flying Daggers) play, respectively, triad member Yan on one side of the law and police inspector Ming on the other. While this could be the set-up for many generic crime thrillers, the twist is exactly where each character's loyalties lie. Yan, it turns out, is actually a deep-cover police officer working in the triads, while Ming is a triad mole working in the police department. Both were recruited at a young age and have been undercover for so long that no one suspects them. Neither man knows of the other's identity, but at a certain point each will be assigned the task of hunting out the spy in their own organization (essentially looking for themselves) while simultaneously trying to find and stop the other.

RATING: 9.5/10 EDITOR CHOICE
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" This is a juicy concept with plenty of opportunity for cat-and-mouse thrills. The first Infernal Affairs from 2002 certainly delivers on that promise, but also goes above and beyond in its attention to fantastically rich psychological depth and the personal relationships of the characters. Each man is conflicted in his duties, struggling to understand and assert his own identity in light of what he must do for his job. Each must face a distinct moral dilemma and decide who he really wants to be. Do the ends truly justify the means? Is redemption possible for a person who has done so many terrible things to achieve a goal he isn't even sure he believes in anymore?

Infernal Affairs is a tightly written and directed movie that packs a lot of substance into its 100-minute length. It has hardly a single wasted or extraneous moment. It has excitement and suspense, rich character development, terrific acting from a large cast, and manages to guide the audience through a labyrinthine and complex plot while developing strong attachments to even minor characters. Its tragic, ironic climax has deep emotional resonance, though unfortunately a last-minute tacked-on ending is something of a cop-out and the movie would have closed stronger if the credits came up a couple of minutes earlier. Despite this minor flaw, however, it is one of the best movies to ever come out of the Hong Kong film industry. The picture was a blockbuster hit throughout Asia, won countless local awards, and spawned two back-to-back sequels the following year of 2003.

If it seems like the first movie should be a self-contained entity with no room for a sequel, Infernal Affairs II proves just how ambitiously filmmakers Andrew Lau (not related to the actor) and Alan Mak really set their sights. Taking a cue from The Godfather Part II, the directors retraced their characters' steps by staging the second movie as a prequel depicting the recruitment and early careers of the teenage Yan and Ming. Almost the entire original cast returns, with the exception of Leung and Lau, whose characters are played by the same younger actors used in the first picture's flashback scenes.

Far from the redundant cash-in it might have been, Infernal Affairs II tells an engrossing story that adds further depth to the events of the first movie by showing us the scope of the backstory leading up to them. With this entry, Infernal Affairs becomes more than just a crime drama; it's a true epic of honor, loyalty, morality, and family. Given a chance to shine here are the father-figures from the first film of triad boss Sam (Eric Tsang) and Inspector Wong (Anthony Wong), whose complicated relationship was hinted at but not fully revealed the first time around. The prequel is longer and a bit messier than the original, with a lot of new characters and a jumpy structure that can be confusing on first viewing. The two teenage leads also look a lot alike, which can be disorienting. On the other hand, it has several genuinely powerful, operatic story arcs and a number of shocking twists. It's a worthy follow-up that both builds off and adds to its predecessor, and was another big critical and commercial success.

Tony Leung and Andy Lau return in Infernal Affairs III. The most complexly structured of the three movies, the final entry serves as both a direct sequel to the first movie, its primary storyline picking up a few months after the original's climax, and a between-quel with a number of flashbacks that take place after the events depicted in part II but before those of part I. Having successfully kept his identity and motives a secret, Ming finds his life falling apart as he deals with the fallout of his previous actions. His wife has left him and the police department has moved him to a desk job as they sort out the investigation of his interaction with Yan. Eventually reassigned to Internal Affairs, Ming's first job is to dig out the other triad moles in the police force. Both out of his desire to do the right thing and a desperate need to cover his own ass, Ming hunts these men down and whacks them one by one until facing off against Inspector Yeung (Leon Lai from Heroic Duo), a man he is convinced was Sam's most important mole and will be the best target to pin his own crimes on.

For whatever reason, big movie trilogies rarely ever conclude on their strongest note. So it is with Infernal Affairs III, which while still a pretty good movie overall is unfortunately the least successful of the series. Most of the blame is due to the film's overly complicated structure, which jumps around too much for the viewer to ever get a firm handle on what's going on or to develop attachments to any one storyline. Although flashbacks allow most of the original cast to return in some capacity, the compelling characters of Sam and Wong are reduced to mere cameos and even Yan hardly has much to do here. Tony Leung doesn't seem particularly involved in the role, as if he'd lost interest, and worse his clean-shaven appearance (he must have shaved for another movie and not had time to grow out his straggly facial hair) makes him look older and creates a number of continuity errors with the events of the first movie. The film's plot has too many twists for its own good. The movie seems to have three or four different endings before finally drawing to a close, and the scene that does finally end the series was not the most effective choice.

What does work in Infernal Affairs III, however, is the continued evolution and breakdown of Ming's character, a man so obsessed with finding personal redemption that he loses sight of the true effects of his actions. The movie also has some clever reworking of the events from part I as we see the version of the story as Ming tells it. Part III even goes out of the way to fill in some of the unexplained gaps in the first movie, such as why Yan was wearing a cast early in the picture, why he was working in a stereo shop for one scene, and why he visits a psychiatrist. Perhaps not all of these details were necessary to explain, but by the time the trilogy is over it has a satisfying cohesion from one part to the next, and feels as though the entire story were elaborately mapped out in advance, unlike many other "trilogies" where one hit film is followed by two needless cash-in sequels. REVIEW:
" Debut director Jang Hoon is one of an increasing number of filmmakers to have apprenticed under Kim Ki-duk (when you make 15 films in 12 years, as Kim has, you produce a lot of alumni). Kim also frontlines four names credited with writing Rough Cut's screenplay. Yet aside from a few plot points, and an obvious Bad Guy reference, this film feels very different structurally and stylistically from anything Kim Ki-duk has ever made. Jang Hoon appears to have some real talent in his own right.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of the film is the role of Gang-pae. So Ji-sub, who teamed with Lim Soo-jung in the cult TV drama Sorry, I Love You, is a real star, and this film shows off all of his charm. He looks menacing without ever having to raise his voice, and emotionally vulnerable without ever having to resort to the usual melodramatic tics. Not only that, his slightly unpredictable behavior produces genuine suspense. Kang Ji-hwan is serviceable in the role of Su-ta, though unfortunately Hong Su-hyun contributes nothing more to the blandly written role of the actress Mi-na than a pretty face. But the screenplay, which knows not to take itself too seriously, does provide moments for other supporting players to shine. Director Bong (Goh Chang-seok), charged with the unenviable task of pulling off this film-within-a-film, is a particularly amusing character.

As often happens, the progression of the story gets a bit murky three-quarters of the way through, and the film temporarily loses its momentum. I found myself not really caring about the details of the inner gang strife that provides the obligatory complications before the climax. However Rough Cut ends with a punch to the gut, and its final image will linger in the memory. "

Simply Actors

Genre: Comedy
Starring: Sui-man Chim, Charlene Choi
Release year: 2007
Language: Chinese - Cantonese
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Accused that the high mortality rate amongst undercover police is due to bad acting, the Hong Kong police send hyperactive Man Long (Jim Chim) to acting school to prepare for his next assignment. Man Long is thrilled as he's always wanted to be an actor, but he's just not very good at it, and he quickly turns into the black sheep of the class with his misguided overacting. But with the right guidance and support from classmate Dani Dan (Charlene Choi), Man Long just might find his groove in time for that undercover job.

RATING: 8/10 (The first Charlene Choi's movie ever I added to my favorite list)
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" “Simply Actors” is an all-star Hong Kong comedy, which along with big names Jim Chim (recently in “AV” and “Mighty Baby”) and one half of Twins Charlene Choi in the cast boasts an incredible number of cameos from the likes of (to mention but a few) Chapman To, Eric Tsang, Anthony Wong, Josie Ho, Sandra Ng, Lawrence Cheng and Isabella Leong. Of course, given this list it’s quite natural to suspect that the film itself is somewhat of a mess, being written around their appearances, and this certainly turns out to be the case, with it basically being a crazed love letter to the acting profession. Thankfully, although it makes little sense and is incoherent throughout, it remains entertaining and enjoyable in the usual Hong Kong comedy genre tradition.

The plot, such as it is, sees useless, acting obsessed Hong Kong cop Man Long (played by Jim Chim, known for his overacting - oh, the irony!) being sent to drama school in a sensible attempt by his superiors to improve the performances of undercover officers in the line of duty. Here, he meets a host of colourful (i.e. weird and two dimensional) characters, including friendly soft porn actress Dani Dan (Charlene Choi), who he immediately strikes up an odd friendship which soon seems to be inching towards romance. Unfortunately, Man Long turns out to be just as bad an actor as he is a cop, something which threatens to ruin not only his relationship with his long suffering girlfriend, but his life as a dangerous undercover operation looms.

The strange thing about “Simply Actors” is that it has a perfectly decent and inventive premise, as a spoof of “Infernal Affairs” and the countless other HK undercover films is long overdue. However, despite the fact that the first twenty minutes or so manage to pack in some genuinely funny parody scenes, the film then abruptly changes direction, ditching the idea in favour of acting school wackiness. Although this is a shame, this kind of shift is pretty much business as usual for Hong Kong comedy and the film’s complete inability to concentrate on one particular narrative strand or approach is not exactly unexpected. Even by the standards of the genre, “Simply Actors” is scatological, though here this turns out to be no bad thing, as it offers a certain amount of chaotic variation which makes the film’s incredibly long running time of two hours more palatable. Special mention goes to the finale, which sees the film launch into bewildering overdrive, throwing in an avalanche of slapstick gags which could have been lifted from any Wong Jing film, before crazily lurching into some laughably clumsy melodrama.

The cavalcade of star cameos works well, though it probably does pad out the film even further. The presence of so many of Hong Kong cinema’s A-list gives the film a sort of collaborative air, as if all concerned thought the message were worthwhile and noble enough to get involved - something which in itself is quite amusing, since the only point the film appears to be trying to make is that actors (and even directors, as Alan Mak, Fruit Chan, Wilson Yip and Ann Hui turn up briefly) are tortured geniuses, misunderstood by normal people. Again, this kind of wacky, misplaced pretentiousness only makes the film more enjoyable, though probably not in the way originally intended. Of course, all this pales in the face of the fact that the film gives fans the long-awaited chance to see the mighty Anthony Wong spouting Shakespeare.

Although this in itself probably justifies the existence of “Simply Actors”, despite its overlong running time, the film is a pretty decent Hong Kong comedy for those fond of, or at least used to the madcap excesses of the genre. Whilst the gags are predictably hit or miss, the film amuses through their sheer volume, and manages to entertain despite, or perhaps for those with a more cynical sense of humour as a result of its many flaws. "

REVIEW:
" This movie is unusual, strange and almost unique. Director Oh Ki-hyeon's efforts to make a korean film that is somewhat different from mainstream surely is something he deserves credit for. He creates a thriller, which offers a good amount of black humour. Towards the end there is more and more drama finding its way on screen, so that the movie actually can go near to you, eventually. However, up until then the dubious characters and the emotional distance the sets induce, create an unnecessary wall between the viewer and the events on screen. Somehow it's really hard to get access to this film, only towards the showdown this changes, fortunately. For some this might be just too late, but, the movie can score with some other strengths.

For quite some time the viewer is left in the dark concerning several questions the movie raises or provokes and the director seems to take pleasure in tantalizing the audience for an almost endless amount of time. If it weren't for the great and mean-charismatic effort of Myeong Gye-nam the movie really would have taken the risk to be just plain boring. Still, even as it is, there are some pacing problems left. Furthermore, many things just don't work out the way, they might have been supposed to. The repetitive style of some scenes is sometimes pretty tedious and somehow the movie just feels strange at times. Why is that? It is because you really never have seen anything like "The Customer is always right" before. And this, as time goes by, actually turns into one of the movie's strengths. Besides, with its handful of people in the center of events the film almost resembles a stage play, which is also fun.

The modest use of black humour and the long great resolution at the end, as well as the several time jumps into the past can be quite fascinating. There are lots of twists, nice allusions, also involving the title of the movie, and in the end it is really easy to put every piece together, eventually, so that everything becomes a whole at last. Even though we can't deny the fact that some (unimportant) pieces get lost along the way.
Interestingly enough the film works strongly on a drama level at the end, and does so impressively well. Finally, we can sympathize with at least one of the characters. The emotional distance, however, remains an annoying thread or rather motif that runs through the whole movie and really could have been avoided.
"The Customer is always right" is a difficult case. For some viewers the film will be just too alienating, and others won't hang on long enough to discover the hidden cleverness in this movie. Furthermore, there are also some flaws to be found concerning entertainment, even if this doesn't carry that much weight.

The fact of the matter is that there are some exceptionally well approaches, the visuals are great and the story is enthralling, too. Director Oh Ki-hyeon just has to work on his final touch. For a first-time-director this is great stuff, however. It leaves us hoping that he gets another chance in the future in order to improve his skills even more. There definitely is potential and his courage to make a somewhat different movie and not go for the umpteenth rom-com as all the other first-time directors do, shall be rewarded in this review.
"The Customer is always right" surely isn't for everyone, but it should be easy to read between the lines that I find Oh's work actually to be very unique and fascinating. "

New Police Story

Genre: Action, Crime
Starring: Jackie Chan, Charlene Choi, Nicholas Tse, Daniel Wu, Charlie Young, Dave Wong
Release year: 2006
Language: Chinese - Cantonese
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
There's not enough whisky in the world to drown the sorrows of Inspector Wing. Once he was Hong Kong's finest cop. Now, he's just a sad drunken mess. How did it come to this? One year earlier. A band of young thieves takes down a large bank. When the police arrives on the scene, the robbers shoot them down in cold blood. Inspector Wing's elite unit is put on the case. Acting on a tip, they storm the thieves' hideout. They're stepping right intro a trap. The place is a labyrinth, rigged as a giant video game. Wing must watch helplessly as, one by one, his team is brutally slaughtered by the audacious gangsters. The present. Young cop Frank convinces Wing to clean up his act and return to the force, so that he can finish the case he started. The thieves are still at large. This is about to change, as Inspector Wing and his new partner gear up for the final round of a very dangerous game.

REVIEW:
" ...Let the mayhem begin. As the cops chase the teens around Hong Kong, the movie pulls out all the stops, staging rooftop pursuits, shopping mall shootouts, and double-decker bus chases. (One wonders how the filmmakers get all this done in such a remarkably crowded city. Do they shoot only on Sunday mornings?)

At the center of every action scene as usual is Chan. At age 50 he may not have the same spring in his step that he did 20 years ago, but he can still shame the rest of us into feeling like the couchiest of couch potatoes. In one of the best set pieces, he finds himself mano a mano with a teenage punk in a Lego showroom. As they fight, millions of Legos shower down all around them until they are knee deep in tiny red and blue bricks. It's classic Chan: funny, exciting, and fast.

New Police Story is violent enough to get an R rating (probably because of the cop killing), but it's really a harmless popcorn film that's perfect for a laid-back night of easy entertainment. A tip of the hat to Chan for taking a break from his big-budget Hollywood mugging to return to his roots and do what he does best: shake up the streets of Hong Kong "

REVIEW:
" After watching “The Longest Night in Shanghai” one may wonder why there aren’t more Pan-Asian films like this made. The movie is unabashedly romantic, has all of the pure gloss found in Asian commercial films, and wins you over with an ultra-impressive performance by Vicki Zhao, the Shanghai backdrop and competitant helming by Yibai Zhang. The movie itself is a co-production involving Japanese Movie-Eye Entertainment and Chinese Shanghai Film Studios. The cast is a near 50/50 split with Chinese actors (Vicki Zhao, Sam Lee, Dylan Kuo, Xinyi Zhang) and Japanese actors (Masahiro Motoki, Naomi Nishida, Naoto Takenaka, Shinobu Otsuka). Yet the film is distinctly placed in the illustrious city of Shanghai and exudes all of the charm that city has to offer without resorting to travel bochure like tackiness.

The appreciation that movie helmer Yiabi Zhang has for the city of Shanghai is all so apparent in the lensing of the film’s backdrop. Basically staying in the Pudong/Bund area of Shanghai and venturing out occasionally to the French Concession area, the movie hits all the right notes to give viewers a taste of what that wonderful city has to offer. Interesting enough, Yibai Zhang previously directed the Shanghai segment of the Chinese/Japanese omnibus film “About Love.” Meanwhile Yuji Yamamura, one of the screen writers in “The Longest Night in Shanghai,” was the co-writer for the 2004 Chinese/Japanese film “Last Love First Love” also set in Shanghai. So yeah there’s a lotta love for that city in this movie.

Meanwhile, Vicki Zhao gives one of her most charming performances ever. She plays the love-struck tomboy, having a quintessential Asian “one-sided” crush with a mechanic and she’ll just steal your heart. From the flashes of playfulness (playing the keyboards with her neighbor yelling to stop) to the somber moments when she realizes her love is getting married with someone else, to the charming broken English banter she has with Masahiro Motoki she shines as much as the city of Shanghai does in this film. Co-star Masahiro Motoki’s performance was noticeably weaker, never approaching the likableness of Zhao’s performance. Usually, saddled with a stoic (some would say “wooden”) demeanor, he gave more of the stereotypical Japanese male businessman performance, rather than a flamboyant make-up artist.

“The Longest Night in Shanghai” doesn’t do everything well. The movie’s many sub-plots all lacked the polish of the main storyline, Masahiro Motoki’s performance was a few magnitudes less appealing than Vicki Zhao’s performance, and with the movie’s super appealing set-up you did expect more from the movie’s finale. Yet, you have Vicki Zhao giving one of her best performances ever (so charming in this film!), the contagious feeling of love blossoming right before your eyes, the heartfelt downsides of “one-sided” romances, and an obvious (at least for myself) love affair with the city itself. If I was Siskel or Ebert this just about the time where the “Two Thumbs Up!” would come in. "

REVIEW:
" ...The first 30-odd minutes of the movie introduces us to some melodrama, where you hear non-stop squabbling between Kwok and his on-screen wife played by the vulnerable Charlie Yeung. Just as those scenes were getting on our nerves, we are led into a gradually despaired world where father and son have to live with each other.

From there on, the mood of the film begins to slow down – a lot. That is couple with some interesting editing done by Tam himself. You see, Tam has worked on movies like Wong Kar Wai’s Days of Being Wild (1991) and Ashes of Time (1994). That clearly explains the rather unconventionally-paced style of editing here. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

So when a stylized method of editing meets such a bittersweet storyline, it may not work for some of us. But it still clinched the Best Picture prize at the recent Golden Horse Awards anyway.

Do not be mistaken that we are dissing this well-made picture, because the film is still very watch-able with its gorgeous visuals and the cast’s fine performances.

Shot in several Malaysian states, viewers from this side of the globe will be familiar with the rustic and worn-down structures in the movie. Brands and words like “Singer”, “Bus Sekolah” and “Restoran” will appeal to the nostalgic in you. Throw in some lush and rich-colored lighting – and you’d have a film with cinematography that is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Those familiar with Asian stars would spot people enjoy the performances from Kwok and Yeung (from Hong Kong), Valen Hsu (from Taiwan) and Qin Hailu (from China). It is interesting to see non-Malaysians playing Malaysians.

Of course, the director would want to tug some heartstrings by casting a dow-eyed little boy in the role of the suffering son. 9-year-old Gouw Ian Iskandar was the chosen one, and he was also awarded with a Best Supporting Actor prize at the recent Golden Horse Awards.

You know what they say, child actors always work.

After a few false endings, the film concludes with an appropriate message, and a bittersweet one at that. It will jolt your memory back to the first shot, where a female voice sings in the background: “You are my sunshine… Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

And that’s where you realize that maybe life isn’t a bed of roses after all. "
